Piercing Motion

Project type

Sculpture, kinetic sculpture, Installation

Date

April 2026

Location

Graz, Austria

Piercing Motion is a kinetic work composed of a metal mechanism moving in a repetitive up-and-down motion, at the center of which a surface of needles repeatedly descends toward a silicone cast of a human torso. The body appears as a soft, vulnerable, almost clinical material, while the mechanical system operates with a steady, indifferent rhythm. The encounter between the needles and the silicone generates a tension between violence and delicacy, control and vulnerability, industrial action and living flesh.

The work draws on the aesthetic of an old machine: a metal wheel, an exposed frame, and a slow mechanical movement that evokes a medical device, an instrument of torture, or a tool displaced from its original function. The repetition of the action transforms the violent gesture into a kind of ritual — not a singular event, but an ongoing state in which the body is subjected to pressure, penetration, and surveillance.

Through the use of silicone, metal, and motion, Piercing Motion explores the relationship between the body and systems of power — technological, medical, political, and emotional. The body is not presented as a whole figure, but as an exposed surface, a site upon which force is enacted. In this way, the work moves between sculpture, mechanical performance, and posthuman object, offering an image of a body that is not only wounded, but also persists within a cycle of pressure, resistance, and survival.
